Connecting Villeneuve to Bourg, the Route de la Corniche winds for 10 kilometers along the Dordogne to finally reveal the Gironde estuary, the largest in Europe at 80 kilometers long. From the foot of the cliffs to their summit, it is an unmissable route for heritage lovers and travelers looking for disconnection and a change of scenery. When traveling by bike, with family or friends, the Corniche route reveals a fabulous picture, a rich mix of natural, historical and cultural heritage.

Cycling expedition along the Corniche road!

Typical fishing huts of the Gironde Estuary, troglodyte houses nestled in the limestone cliff, marvelous gardens where oleanders, palm trees and banana trees flourish… The Corniche road also called “flowered cornice” or the “captains’ route ” brings together over just ten kilometers some emblematic wonders of the Blaye Bourg Terres d’Estuaire destination!

The Corniche route by bike

On the road to the troglodyte houses

Created during the excavation of stones intended for the construction of the city of Bordeaux, the troglodyte houses that you observe from the Corniche road are witnesses of the past still inhabited today! It is possible to admire them from the road, or to observe them more closely (but not too closely!) by taking hiking trails.

On your way you will come across numerous information panels, called “windows on the estuary”. Distributed along the Route de la Corniche between Bourg and Roque-de-Thau, or inland when the view of the estuary is suitable, they reveal information to you on the history, geography, heritage and culture of the territory. From the tidal bore to the islands of the estuary, including the presentation of the aquatic fauna that evolves in its waters or the history of the wrecks inherited from the Second World War... You will soon be knowledgeable about our destination!

Is your heart torn between a traditional bike and an electric bike? Some practical information will certainly help you decide! The Corniche road is 10 kilometers long and represents a bike ride of around 2 hours round trip. Depending on the frame chosen, it will be suitable for both experienced athletes and lovers of gentle walks.

Bourg: The beginning of your epic

Starting point for this adventure, Bourg is a small picturesque town to which the markets and the numerous places for tasting and selling local wines give an undeniable charm! Nestled on a rocky peak, it is crossed by the Roy staircase which connects the upper town and the lower town and has more than 90 steps.

After a stroll at your own pace through its streets, and the discovery of the Côtes de Bourg and Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellations, it will be time to begin your trip!

If you are not already equipped, you can opt to rent an electric bike: the perfect steed for roaming in “slow” and effortless mode. Bike on, helmet on your head, and yellow vest on... You are ready for your cycling journey!

The belvedere of Château Eyquem

A short distance from Bourg, reach the village of Bayon-sur-Gironde and the belvedere of Château Eyquem to admire the Bec d'Ambès where the Garonne and the Dordogne meet! Also take the opportunity to visit the castle and taste the exceptional wines of the Côtes de Bourg estate.

The Church of Bayon sur Gironde

On the way down, a stop at the heart of the village and its Notre Dame church will be essential! This 12th century building is a little gem of Gothic and Romanesque architecture and its unique bell tower offers a panoramic view of the choppy waters of the estuary. Right next door, take advantage of a park and its picnic tables to take some time to breathe... before hitting the road again!

A window onto the estuary at Furt

From the small village of Furt, you will discover the wreck of the Frisco, a ghost ship relic of the Second World War emerging from the water. Don't miss an opportunity to listen to locals' stories and learn how this tanker was scuttled by the German Navy in August 1944.

The port of Roque de Thau

The Corniche road will take you to the final stage of your tour: the port of Roque de Thau, the perfect spot for a well-deserved break. Don't miss its pontoon from which you can admire one of the most beautiful sunsets in the destination, or its carrelet, a small cabin on stilts typical of the banks of the Gironde, used for fishing.

After covering a 16-kilometer loop, your journey ends where it began: in Bourg! Want a little respite? You can put aside your mount for a well-deserved break in one of the village's charming restaurants.

If you haven't seen enough and you want to continue further... no problem! You can extend your journey to Blaye by taking the Route Verte. This will take you to the village of Plassac and its superbly preserved Gallo-Roman remains and up to the citadel of Blaye, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
