Your itinerary
Step 1: Tourist Office
In front of the Tourist Office is the covered hall. In the past, the villagers celebrated there. Nowadays, the market is held there on Sunday mornings. In the Middle Ages, the small columns that supported the roof were made of wood, what has wood been replaced by today?
Step 2: Place de la Halle
Several Louis have been kings of France: Louis 1st, Louis 16, Louis 18… Our Louis, who was also called the Sun King, bears the number which corresponds to the number of small columns in the hall. How many do you count?
Step 3: Sea Gate
Now, take a good look at the photo and head towards this medieval gate, built in the ramparts (= walls that protected the city). To do this, take a downhill street. It is the "Gate of the Sea", so called because it allowed to go down to the river. Its opening has been enlarged several times to let what do you think?
Step 4: District Square
Return to the market and go to the left of the Tourist Office. You are now in a square with a stone rampart (wall) and trees: this is the District Square. Look along the rampart for the 2 cannons. They date from 1784. Before, the Gironde estuary was the scene of real naval battles.
These cannons were used to defend Bourg from pirate attacks. How are they placed?
Step 5: The Roy Stairs
A little further to the left are the King's stairs, that is to say those of our Louis. Do like him, get down. At the corner, take the door where there is a tree. To find its name, solve this puzzle:
° My first is the opposite of boy
° My second is a plant that we often pick at Christmas
° My third is a linking word which adds
° My everything is a tree with delicious fruits.
Step 6: The tanks
Go straight ahead along the medieval ramparts. You will see several underground exits that Louis used to secretly descend from the upper town. At the big mine, do you notice the big hole in the rock? Bring your nose close and smell. The smell is curious.
What is it about?
A hint: it’s used to move cars forward
Step 7: The ramparts
Follow the path towards the pond, turn right and climb the stairs. Louis took this road in a carriage.
Step 8: The Citadel
Go through the iron gate and enter the park. Louis loved walking in this park, seeing the river from the terrace and playing hide and seek behind the trees. If you have time, do like him and have fun!
Go to the big beautiful house. What is her name?
Step 9: The Carriage Museum
Follow the gravel path to pass next to the “Au temps des calèches” museum. Inside are pretty carriages and an underground passage that Louis took to secretly go down to the port.
Draw a carriage too
Step 10: Saint Géronce Church
Leave the citadel park. Turn right and go to the church. Above its front door, you can see a large circle carved in stone. What is it called?
To find, reverse the letters 2 by 2 (JE = EJ) of this word ORASEC.
Step 11: The Gargoyles
Several Gargoyles are watching you! Do you know what it is? These are friendly stone monsters that are hidden high in the walls of the church. How many are on this church?
Step 12: Return to the Tourist Office
You answered all the questions, well done! Your detective skills have taken you all the way. Now find the cannons in District Square and return to the Tourist Office. A surprise awaits you!
