It's a true summary of the most beautiful things that France has to offer... A cycle route of more than 700 km linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, it is also called the Canal des 2 Mers. The purist Girondins that we are will tell you that the ocean and the sea are not the same thing. But the route is so beautiful that we forgive this imprecision. Especially when an entire section of the route offers the territory of Blaye Bourg Terres d'Estuaire on a plateau (at speeds).

Everyone on the Canal des 2 mers by bike!

It is one of the most popular French cycle routes for cycle tourists. And for good reason: its route is as exceptional as it is affordable for all levels. 700 km in total across 7 departments, divided into 32 stages from Royan to Sète (6 sections). Your two wheels won't believe their eyes (and vice versa): the crossed panoramas are breathtaking. First the ocean then the Gironde Estuary, the largest in Europe. Next comes the Bordeaux vineyard, the most famous in the world.

Then, the majestic ramparts of Carcassonne, before taking the Canal du Midi, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (17 UNESCO sites along the route). And what about the Etang de Thau upon arrival?!

100km of happiness in Blaye Bourg Terres d’Estuaire

BBTE Tourism

The route crosses the Gironde extensively, from Vitrezay to Bordeaux along the Gironde Estuary, most of it in BBTE territory. Two sections roll out the red carpet for little queens: 39,44 km from Vitrezay to Blaye (allow around 2h40) and 60,92 km from Blaye to Bordeaux (i.e. a little over 4 hours of laps).

From vineyards to forests, from small fishing ports to Verrou Vauban, the itinerary is a treat... Our suggestion: do it over 2 days and sleep in Blaye, to enjoy 100% of the charms of the territory, and not count your breaks photos, tastings and visits.

Canal of the 2 Seas

Cycle route of more than 700 km linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

Notable milestones:

  • Departure: Vitrezay. It is the limit between Charente-Maritime and Gironde. The port is magnificent!
  • Terres d'Oiseaux: the birds hide there to feed, but the observation huts will allow you to spot some of them through binoculars among the 130 species passing through during the year...
  • Blaye: the Citadel, Vauban's defensive jewel, will be your reward. His visit is a must. Already come ? Opt for a visit through the underground…
  • Plassac: the land of mosaics! The Gallo-Roman Villa reveals very well preserved remains.
  • The Flowered Corniche Route: on one side, troglodyte houses. On the other, gardens and squares right on the bank. Watch out for cars on this section, because your eyes may get a little lost in this breath of rural charm...
  • Bourg: a break “glass of wine with a breathtaking view of the Dordogne” is highly recommended, since you are about to leave it… Head to the terrace of the Maison du Vin des Côtes de Bourg for that!
  • Prignac-et-Marcamps: did you know? Here is a decorated cavity dating from the Aurignacian (much older than the Lascaux Caves): the Pair-non-Pair cave. Fascinating…
  • Saint-André-de-Cubzac: charming village typical of the “French” art of living, where – among others – Commander Cousteau was born.
  • Cubzac-les-Ponts: It's time to whistle, for the superstitious: crossing the Gustave Eiffel bridge approaching!
