The Port of Cubzac-les-Ponts

The Port of Cubzac-les-Ponts

It is under the Eiffel Bridge that you will find a small picnic area where you can sit and wait for the sunset. Take advantage of the last light of day to admire this building designed by Gustave Eiffel and built under his direction from 1879 to 1883, destroyed during the Second World War and completely renovated by the engineer's grandson. Seen from below, this metal colossus takes on the appearance of a neo-Gothic cathedral on which the setting sun projects golden colors.

The hills of Montalon – Saint-André-de-Cubzac

In your quest for the most beautiful sunsets in the destination, don't miss that of Saint-André-de-Cubzac! From the hillside of Montalon, located just before the Bec d'Ambès where the Dordogne and the Garonne meet, we witness a breathtaking twilight above these golden waters. There we find the preserved towers of the old windmills, emblematic of the Gironde craft heritage. In all the surrounding villages, we like to tell the story of the quarrels which pitted millers and fishermen against each other and punctuated their daily lives... like the Gallic villagers in the comic strip Asterix and Obelix!

The ramparts of Bourg

The ideal day for us? Cycle along the Corniche road and complete this loop with dinner in one of the village restaurants. After a short digestive stroll through its streets, gently begin your ascent towards the upper town to enjoy a breathtaking panorama from the ramparts. This belvedere which has dominated the Dordogne for centuries is steeped in history and will not leave you indifferent.

The Corniche Route and its squares

Always on the Corniche road, which winds through the cliffs to link Bourg to Villeneuve, treat yourself to a stop in Furt! There you will see gardens with their own net, these small fishing huts built on stilts and used by amateur fishermen. Signs provide some valuable information about the estuarine ecosystem, and the view is magnificent!

The terrace of Château Eyquem

With a panoramic view of the vineyard, the splendid Château d'Eyquem also dominates the confluence of the Dordogne and the Garonne. From its terrace you will take in the full extent of the gigantic estuary, the largest in Europe, where the fresh waters of the rivers meet the salt waters of the ocean. Don't miss the compass rose and the orientation table which will allow you to better understand and understand the landscape.

The port of Plassac

Between art and history, the mosaic village of Plassac is an obligatory stop on your route! Nestled along the Estuary, the village is known for his Gallo-Roman villa built in the 1st century and whose ornaments are remarkably well preserved. Admire the contemporary mosaics that adorn the streets of Plassac, and sit on the benches or picnic tables port which face the estuary or go up to the virgin viewpoint.

The Citadel of Blaye

There are numerous spots to admire the setting sun from the Citadel of Blaye ! A colossal witness to history, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, it offers vast expanses of grass where you can lay your blanket and admire the spectacle. The Place d'Armes where the former Minimes convent was located is also an ideal place to watch the sun disappear behind the horizon. The team's advice: for an even more perfect moment, you never say no to a local ice cream Vanilla Lily, our guilty pleasure!

The Port de la Belle Etoile in Saint-Androny

A small spot hidden in the middle of the marshes, the Port de la Belle Étoile is a timeless place where calm reigns supreme. During the day, we like to go there with family, friends or lovers for a picnic or to rest, then stay until the end of the afternoon to see the last light of day disappear in the distance.

The Port of Couvertures

From its 10-metre high tower, discover the Port des Couvertures and all its squares installed along the banks. This port, typical of the estuarine landscape, can be viewed from the shore or from the picnic area, and offers a fabulous spectacle when the bright sun sets over the Gironde and the sky is crossed by the flight of birds. Here, the calm is only apparent, because the fresh waters that flow in front of you will soon flow into the Atlantic!
